Balochistan: Pakistan Finds Largest Gas Reserves Ever in Kalat, Balochistan and Khairpur, Sindh. The state-owned Pakistan Petroleum Limited PPL announced a piece of good news for the entire Pakistani nation that they made two biggest discoveries of hydrocarbon reserves in Balochistan and Sindh.
There was a time when Pakistan was able to supply its own needs of gas without external assistance and now Oil and gas sector in Pakistan is facing a real problem, which has forced the country to rely on imported gas.
Pakistan has become the world-leading Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) user country however 20th largest gas consumer of the world this shows how much gas Pakistan is misusing and demand for oil and gas exceeds their production. There is an extreme problem of demand and supply in the oil and gas industry.
In this crucial time where there is an extreme problem of demand and supply in the oil and gas industry this news of new discoveries of gas reserves is not less than a wonder.
Margand X-1, Kallat, Balochistan Gas Discovery
According to the details, the company said the well was spud on 30th of June 2019 to measure the depth and reached to 4500 meters inside Chiltan Limestone. It is also important to mention here that PPL owns 100% of the drilling rights of the block and had been drilling at Margand X-1 block since 30th June 2019.
Drill Stem Test (DST) was done in Chiltan Limestone, which discovered that these gas reserves might potentially exceed 1 trillion cubic feet, an official revealed, adding that drilling of more wells would support the estimate.
During Drill Stem Test (DST) the well flowed a maximum of 10.7 million cubic feet per day of gas at 64/64 inches block size at a flowing level of head pressure of 516 pounds per square inch with 132 barrels per day liquid. However, the nature of the liquid is being explored and the well has the potential to stream at higher rates after an acid stimulation job.
Bistro-1, Khairpur, Sindh Gas Discovery
The second hydrocarbon reserve was discovered in an exploratory well, Bistro-1 in Latif Block, in Khairpur District, Sindh. According to the details, the well was spud on the 6th of October 2019 to test the hydrocarbon potential of B and intra B sands of the Lower Guru development. The well was effectively drilled to a depth of 11,854 ft. On the completion of the well, B sand zone was perforated, which flowed 28.6 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd) of gas with 152 barrels per day (condensed) water at a flowing pressure of (FWHP) 3116 pounds per square inch at 44/64” block size.
Collectively, the company has discovered 39.3 MMscfd of gas.
Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) has an aggressive exploration program geared to enhance production and restock reserves. This is the first significant discovery of gas reserves in Balochistan since 2000 and it has opened a new sub-basin for more hydrocarbon exploration. This discovery will enlarge the PPL’s hydrocarbon reserves and will contribute to reducing the gap between supply and demand of oil and gas in the country through the utilization of native resources.
It is quite evident that the demand is greater than its supply. These new gas reserves will help reduce LNG import and results saving $900 million for the country. It will also reduce the economic uncertainty which is another risk faced by the oil and gas sector.
